Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2026  ·  Contact: hello@chartededutech.com

The short version: Course Compass runs entirely in your browser. It has no server of its own, does not send your data to Charted Edu Tech, and contains no analytics or trackers. Everything it stores stays on your device, and data only leaves your browser when it goes directly to a service you have configured — your school's Canvas, our AI backend (Campus proxy), or Google Drive.

What the extension stores (locally, on your device)

Course Compass stores the following data via chrome.storage.local. This data is never transmitted to Charted Edu Tech:

  • Your Canvas web address and (optionally) a Canvas access token.
  • Your Campus AI token (optional; only if you enable AI features on a paid plan).
  • Your study notes (typed, uploaded, or imported from Google Drive) and the derived notes index.
  • Saved course syllabi, cached assignment summaries and study plans, and your settings (theme, toggles, preferences).
  • Gameplay state: dubloons, streaks, current treasure-hunt task, and cosmetic unlocks.

Cross-device sync (optional)

By default all of the above is stored only on the current device. If you turn on "Sync my setup across devices" in Settings, a small subset — your Canvas URL, Canvas token, Campus AI token, and your preferences and gameplay progress (theme, toggles, Drive settings, dubloons, streaks) — is stored via chrome.storage.sync instead, which Chrome syncs to your own Google account so your other signed-in computers pick it up.

Your notes, uploaded files, and the notes index are never synced — they stay on each device. Sync is off by default and is a per-device choice you control in Settings.

You can delete all stored data at any time by removing the extension or clearing the extension's storage from Chrome settings.

What data is sent, and where

Data is sent only to services you set up, directly from your browser:

1. Your school's Canvas site

The extension reads your assignments, due dates, grades, and page content using your existing Canvas login session (or a token you provide). These requests go to your own Canvas domain. No Canvas data is sent anywhere else.

2. Charted Edu Tech Campus AI proxy — only if you use AI features

When you click an AI action (such as notes indexing, quiz generation, or pre-grading), the relevant text — for example a page's content, your notes, or images of PDF pages for OCR — is sent to our AI backend (the Campus proxy, running on Cloudflare Workers). The Campus proxy handles authentication against your plan's credit balance and routes the request to an AI model on your behalf. This is governed by Charted Edu Tech's data handling practices; we do not retain input or output content beyond the request lifecycle. Nothing is sent to the AI backend unless AI is turned on and you click a button.

3. Google Drive — only if you connect it

With your consent (OAuth, read-only drive.readonly scope), the extension lists and downloads the note files you choose, into your browser, to use as study material. No Drive data is sent anywhere else — not to Charted Edu Tech's servers.

4. Chrome Sync (Google) — only if you enable cross-device sync

When on, the small subset of settings listed above (including your Canvas token and Campus AI token) is written to chrome.storage.sync, which the Chrome browser syncs through your Google account to your other devices. This is handled by Chrome/Google, not by Charted Edu Tech, and is governed by Google's privacy policy. It is off unless you turn it on.

The extension uses no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services, and does not sell or share data with anyone.

Permissions, and why they are needed

  • storage / unlimitedStorage — save your settings, notes, and cache on your device.
  • scripting + host access to your Canvas domain — display the in-page panel and read coursework on Canvas pages you visit.
  • identity — the Google Drive sign-in flow (only used if you connect Drive).
  • notifications — a desktop notification when a notes-indexing job finishes.
  • alarms — schedule occasional background maintenance tasks.

Sensitive and educational data

Course Compass processes your coursework, which may include educational records. All processing is at your direction and on your device; data is only sent to the services listed above that you configure. We encourage you to review your institution's policies before using AI features on sensitive or graded coursework.

Children's privacy

Course Compass is intended for students at the secondary and post-secondary level. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information through the extension, please contact us at hello@chartededutech.com so we can address it promptly.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Course Compass after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
